The department of Surgery at Goa Medical College is dedicated to provide the best comprehensive surgical care to the people of Goa and train the next generation of surgeons to serve the state.
General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland (depending on the availability of head and neck surgery specialists). They also deal with diseases involving the skin, breast, soft tissue, and hernias.
I. Cancer lesions
A. Cancer surgery of head face neck such as parotid gland, thyroid, tongue, cheek, floor of mouth, sub mandibular gland, para thyroid and radical neck dissection.
B. Chest wall & thorax : All breast cancer surgery, thymic tumors, and axillary mass dissection.
C. Abdomino – Pelvic Cancer Surgery: Stomach, Pancreas, gall bladder, spleen, small intestine, colon, rectum and anal canal.
D. Extremity Cancer : Squamous cell cancer, malignant melanoma, soft tissue sarcoma.
II. Non Cancerous lesions:
A. Oral cavity, salivary glands, thyroid, lymph node, parathyroid and soft tissue lesions.
B. Chest wall lesions, all benign breast lesions, axillary lesions.
C. Thoracic empyema, decortication, etc.
D. Abdomino – pelvic – (Open/laparoscopic).
All operation on stomach, pancreas, gall bladder, spleen, small intestine, appendix, colon, rectum anal canal and operation for GERD, Abdominal wall hernias, hydrocele, haemorrhoids and perianal lesions.
III. Peripheral lesions :
Soft tissue lesions such as Lipoma, sebaceous cyst, skin grafting, etc.
Surgery for varicose veins :
Cellulitis, abscess, ulcers, diabetic foot, amputation for extremity gangrene, necrotizing fascitis.
IV. Besides this all emergencies including trauma to neck, chest, abdomen are carried out by department of surgery on emergency basis, except complicated and radiologically proven peripheral and central vascular lesions as decided by Consultant surgery from time to time
V. Also Paediatric & Plastic routine and emergency surgery is carried out by department of General Surgery in absence of Paediatric and Plastic-Surgeons.
VI. Casualty : All patients requiring emergency surgery as well as trauma services are handled through Casualty by the respective departments.
