 Introduction

The term ‘Plastic Surgery’ was introduced by Von Graefe and is derived from the Greek work "plastikos" which means ‘fit for moulding’ and Sir Harold Gillies is considered Father of modern Plastic Surgery. However the earliest plastic surgery procedures in the Before Christ era were performed in India and recorded in the writings of Sushruta, and published in Sushruta Samhita.

This superspeciality consists of two main sub specialities -Reconstructive and Aesthetic.  Reconstructive surgery restores to function and form the structures which are deformed while Aesthetic surgery attempts to improve the appearance of normal structures.

In Goa Medical College, an independent Department of Plastic Surgery has been created in December 2015. However a Plastic Surgery Unit has been in existence since 2006 in the Department of Surgery.  It provides consultation in the outpatient section No. 5 on Monday and Thursday and handles inpatients and emergency cases requiring plastic surgery management.  It is staffed with a full time Professor, an Assistant Professor, an Honorary Consultant, 4 Assistant Lecturers, 4 Senior Residents and 6 Junior Residents.

The Plastic Surgery services will shortly be expanded with a 12 bedded ward for plastic surgical cases, a dedicated 6 bedded Intensive Burns Care Unit and a 6 bedded step down area.
